With the advent of smart phones and app technology, skiers now have a world of information at their frosty fingertips.
From weather conditions and avalanche bulletins, to interactive piste maps, ski instruction, resort restaurant finders and even where to locate the nearest loo - there's not much you can't access from an app. Here's six of the best:
1) Ski Forecast (free)
A great forecast app that gives weather and conditions reports for over 800 ski resorts in Europe. You can check a forecast up to 15 days ahead with key information about snow on the ground and probability, temperatures and wind speed/direction. You can also add favourites for quick reference.
2) Ski Tracks (£0.69)
Press start on your app when you leave the hotel or chalet and it will track your movements throughout the day. This clever analysis tool will give you a run-by-run record of your speed, distance and slope angles, and allows you to upload photos en-route and view your day's skiing in 3D on Google Earth.
3) SkiMaps (£2.99)
Download trail maps from your favourite ski resorts to your phone and use the in-built GPS to find your way round the slopes. You can send your location to friends and find each other in the snow. Record GPS tracks and view graphs of your speed, distance and altitude. View webcams with internet connection.
(4) Ski School Intermediate (£2.99)
Dubbed as 'your portable ski instructor', this lesson app aims to strengthen your turns and improve edge control. Aimed at skiers of intermediate ability, this punchy app gives great tips and clear video demonstrations with qualified ski instructor Darren Turner. Record as you ski and use the in-built, split-screen technology to analyse your style.
(5) Mammut Safety (free)
Mammut puts its years of safety experience to good use with this essential SOS app. Armed with necessary information including avalanche bulletins, GPS emergency tracker and contact system (to send your exact location to the emergency services), personal safety equipment requirements and risk checker.
(6) Ski Club Snow Reports (free)
