Over the river Rosanna and a free bus ride away, Rendl offers pretty good off piste skiing, especially if the weather is looking worse for wear. Many of the seasonaires and guides will know the area well due to the predictable snow dumps which makes this spot in St Anton perfect for off piste skiing with a mountain guide.

After taking the Gampberg chair to near the top of the mountain, head right and under the lift to find a lengthy powder filled stretch, fantastic for getting your poles up and enjoying what off piste skiing is about. For a more milder off piste run through some beautiful woodland try skiing between the pistes of the Maass Bahn. Hinteres Rendl is also well worth a try, especially on a fine day.

Rendl is great for small groups of off piste skiers who have an afternoon to spend taking it easy off the main slopes.

The fat woman. Even within a week of a fresh powder dump, Valluga is the finale to what can be a truly exhilarating off piste experience in St Anton. Treat this lady with respect though, as making the choice of two or three seriously tough initial descents deserves it. However, once you’ve skied the intensely enjoyable powder fields all the way to Zürs you’ll think she’s beautiful.

Getting a ski guide for this area is essential, although those who want to catch a glimpse can make their way up the Vallugabahn (1&2) cable with the powder junkies and take in some breathtaking views.

If you’re into off piste skiing and have some decent experience, we’d definitely recommend giving Valluga a go…be gentle with her though.
